The regulation of the food sector is pivotal to ensure that food businesses follow the regulatory standards and adopt good manufacturing and hygiene practices without amiss.It is also essential to protect consumers from health hazards and financial losses to Food Business Operators (FBOs)caused by foods that violate the food regulations. Recently, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has drawn reference to the FoodSafety and Standards (Food Products Standardsand Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2021 notified on 4th March, 2021 which prescribes standards for Bajra Flour (Pearl Millet Flour) and Jowar Flour (Sorghum Flour). Also,the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Fi[th Amendment Regulations, 2021 notified on 15th Nov, 2021 prescribing standards for Multigrain flour (atta) and Mixed millet flour.
In the same wake, FSSAI has received various representations from stakeholders for reconsideration of the specified values in respect of the quality parameters. The specified value has been reconsidered by FSSAI in terms of quality parameters namely, ‘Alcoholic acidity’ in the standards of Bajra flour, Jowar Flour, Multigrain Attaand Mixed millet flour. Besides,‘Total dietary fibre’ and ‘Moisture content’ in the standards of mixed millet flour. The FSSAI has decided to keep enforcement of the following parameter in abeyance till 31″ December, 2022. The apex body of food safety has decided to revise the maximum limit of the moisture content in Mixed millet flour from‘11%’ to13%’, and operationalize the same with immediate effect under section 18(2)(d) of the FSS Act.
FSSAI came up with such an amendment to make food more nutritious with the right composition.
