Question: Does Irradiation of food products remove Aflatoxin  Microorganism?

Answer: Irradiation kills all micro-organisms including those that produce Aflatoxin, but it cannot remove the aflatoxin that has already been formed in the products.

Question: Could you confirm us if my product is RUTF, which contains SMP, Sugar, Peanuts and vitamins-minerals in descending order? What will be IFC code, Sub category code and Codex code. Is it necessary to take the Product Approval?

Answer: In our opinion, the products which are being used for Therapeutic Purposes are not covered under FSS Act, Rules & Regulations

Question: Can we use an animated picture of cow or any other animal on the packaging?

Answer: There should not be any false or misleading impression. For example, if you are selling the cow milk then buffalo picture on the label will be a false impression, hence labelling violation.

Question: How to define veg.& non veg. in restaurant’s menu? Is there any special guideline for this?

Answer: The Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 have specified the guidelines for the same and as per the guidelines, Veg & Non-Veg Symbol has to be mentioned on the restaurant Menu. Question: I am getting dry snacks from a manufacturer but want to sell them under my brand name, so what are the label compulsions and what license do we require?

Answer: You and the Manufacturer have to obtain a license and have to follow the requirements Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.

Question:We manufacture pickles, sauces and pastes which contains Sunflower oil, cotton seed oil and mustard oil individually in above mentioned products. Do we also have to now declare trans fat and saturated fat on the label? please guide.

Answer: Nutritional information has to be mentioned on the discussed food products. Yes, it is mandatory to mention the trans fat & saturated fat on the labels. Please read: Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 for Nutritional Information.

Question: What are the laboratory parameters (Physical, Chemical & Microbiological) that need to be tested for dry fruits such as Almonds, Pistachios, Raisins etc as per FSSAI and at what frequency?

 Answer: As per the regulations

  • The product shall be free from mould, living / dead insects, insect fragments and rodent contamination. The product shall be uniform in colour with a pleasant taste and flavour characteristic of fruit / nut free from off flavour, mustiness, rancidity and evidence of fermentation. The product shall be free from added colou
  • The products shall be tested for Metal Contaminants, Crop Contaminants & Naturally Occuring Toxin Substances, Pesticide Residues, Microbiological parameters for Yeast & Mould Count, Salmonella, Shigella, E.coli etc.

Food Safety Regulations suggest that FBOs should go for the testing of the food products at-least once in every six months.

Question:Do service providers of post-harvest facilities require FSSAI license? For example fruit ripening chambers which provide ripening services, cold storages, pre cooling chambers providing primary processing of fresh produce for exports.

Answer: Yes, you have to register your business under FSS Act, Rules & Regulations. Whether you need a license or registration will depend upon your annual turnover.
