Karunesh Singh, ISU Cluster head for Lamipak, sheds light on trends poised to impact the Indian dairy industry in 2024 and underscores Lamipak’s diverse range of aseptic packaging formats specifically designed for the Indian dairy market.

Question- Could you provide an overview of Lamipak’s business operations and the scale at which the company operates?

Lamipak is a global leader in aseptic packaging solutions. We offer aseptic laminates for both roll and sleeve-fed machines, alongside a suite of sustainable packaging options that include paper straws and their corresponding wrappers. We also provide technical and marketing support to ensure smooth production and market success for our customers.

Our two manufacturing facilities, located in Kunshan, China, and Indonesia, supply aseptic solutions to over 340 customers in 78 countries worldwide. Our clientele includes leading dairy and juice companies that are highly recognised from all corners of the globe. In 2023, we delivered 13 billion packages globally, and we anticipate this sales volume to rise further as we bring new customers on board.

Question- What unique solutions does Lamipak offer to the food and beverage industry?

Lamipak provides a comprehensive range of packaging solutions for food and beverages. We offer our aseptic packing solutions in 14 distinct shapes and 42 formats in reel-fed. Our product portfolio features innovative options in multiple sizes such as LamiDiamond LamiGemina, LamiEdge, and LamiLeaf.

For 2024, we are expanding our product lines to deliver even more options for reel and sleeve-fed machinery.  A prime example is the recently launched LamiSleeve, a high-quality alternative for sleeve-fed laminates which will be available in 4 shapes and 19 formats when the production is fully operational.

Question- Sustainability has emerged as one of the top mega trends shaping the future of the food and beverage packaging industry. What are some of the sustainable solutions that Lamipak offers players in the industry?

Some of our most recent innovations have been LamiNatural, Lamipak‘s first sustainable product, LamiPure, the next- generation aluminium free aseptic carton, and our U-shaped paper straw which have been created with the intention of offering sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

LamiNatural, comprised of bio-based polyethylene and unbleached paperboard, boasts 85% renewable content and a carbon footprint 10% lower than standard packaging materials. The use of unbleached paperboard reduces chemical use and minimizes waste of natural resources.

LamiPure, our next-generation sustainable offering, builds upon LamiNatural’s success, by eliminating the aluminum layer from aseptic carton packaging, all while preserving shelf life and barrier properties. This advancement will not only reduce carbon emissions by at least 37% but also enhance recyclability.

Beyond innovations in beverage cartons, we offer U-shaped paper straws crafted entirely from recyclable paper, making them a responsible alternative to single-use plastic straws. The three-layer structure, utilizing 100% food-grade material, ensures the straw’s integrity remains intact even when submerged in liquids for extended periods. We have also introduced paper wrappers for our straws, eliminating plastic entirely from the equation. These wrappers also enhance the visual appeal of the packaged straws.

It is also important to note that the paperboard we use in all Lamipak’s aseptic cartons and straws is either Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) or Forest Steward Council (FSC) certified, demonstrating that it is sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Question- What differentiates Lamipak from its competitors in this market?

Several qualities set us apart from our competitors, but perhaps the most significant is our unwavering commitment to product quality and safety. Lamipak is dedicated to delivering packs and straws of the highest quality, consistently meeting or surpassing industry benchmarks.

We excel in tailoring pack sizes and conducting machine conversions to meet the specific requirements and preferences of our customers. We also boast one of the most efficient supply chain networks in the industry. Our extensive stocking facilities in both manufacturing units, coupled with efficient logistics and supply chain management, ensure prompt delivery and significant cost savings for our clients.

Finally, we are industry leaders in sustainability. Utilizing environmentally friendly, sustainable raw materials, procuring FSC and PEFC certified paper boards, and implementing energy-efficient processes, has earned our China facility LEED Platinum status and our Indonesia unit LEED Gold certification.

Question- What trends do you foresee shaping the Indian dairy industry in 2024?

We expect trends in health and wellness, growing interest in traditional and exotic flavours, innovations in textures, and sustainability to continue shaping the dairy beverage industry in 2024 and beyond.

In this landscape, aseptic packaging plays a crucial role in supporting the growth momentum of packaged milk by enabling wider availability, accessibility, and preservation of freshness. Additionally, Indian consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of food packaging and their carbon footprint. This has led to a surge in demand for sustainable food packaging, pressuring companies to prioritize eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives.

Question- How does Lamipak see itself positioned to capitalize on the growth of the Indian dairy market?

With the Indian dairy market experiencing substantial growth, Lamipak’s entry could not be more timely. We offer a diverse range of aseptic packages, ranging in sizes from 20ml to 1000ml, ensuring we cater to every customer need. We also have a 2000ml pack to offer to customers serving HoReCa or other institutional sectors.

Recognizing the immense potential in the Indian dairy sector, we actively participated in the 50th Dairy Industry Conference held by the Indian Dairy Association (IDA). This platform allowed us to engage with stakeholders and contribute to the industry’s growth and development.
