Makhana is primarily farmed in the Mithilanchal region of Bihar and its nutritional value and health benefits are numerous. For that reason, they are able to export a large number of these crops, which contributes to the overall state economy.
The government is going to organise farmers into Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and will offer them all the facilities required to improve their practices. So, a more well-organised market will be formed that will reduce intermediaries and ensure better prices for farmers.
Plus, the government is also going to establish a National Institute of Food Technology in Bihar. This will develop the food processing sector, provide training directly, and directly benefit entrepreneurship.
Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, highlighted on social media how makhana can be the next superfood and become a ₹6,000 crore industry. Through this, India can make a brand and target the global market.
This overall initiative shows that the government is working to improve the agricultural and food processing sectors.
