The national food regulator has decided to step up efforts to curb the cases of food adulteration and has directed the state machinery to intensify surveillance on such cases.

It is learnt that the states were asked to follow surveillance with raids and send the action taken reports to FSSAI headquarters.

Aiming at comprehensive food safety, all food categories were covered under the plan for enforcement to ensure quality of food products thereby minimising risk associated with adulteration of food.

The FSSAI has also called for monitoring efforts across the food supply chain, with renewed focus on enhancing surveillance systems, and strengthen laboratory practices.

Adulteration in food products has been a common practice across the country. Several incidences of adulterated food products seized from various locations were reported on regular basis.

Experts feel that it’s a challenge for the food authority to manage food safety ecosystem in a country like India and there should be a continuity in such efforts
