The apex food regulator, FSSAI, has issued an order prohibiting the production of blended edible vegetable oil of mustard oil. The order shall come into force from October 1, 2020.
The food regulator has until now allowed 20% blending in mustard oil under the standards for blended vegetable oil in regard to FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
However, the Government of India has directed the FSSAI to prohibit blending in mustard oil and facilitate manufacture and sale of pure mustard oil for domestic consumption.
FSSAI, in this regard, decided to bring in an amendment namely – Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2020. Under this amendment, a new clause is added for prohibition on sale of any blended edible vegetable oil containing mustard oil.
The FSSAI order says, “The draft regulations in this regard are in process of being notified and the process of finalisation is likely to take some time. To implement the direction of the Government of India, it has been decided to operationalise this regulation with effect from 1st October 2020.”
The order added that no manufacturing of blended vegetable oil with mustard oil as an ingredient shall be allowed from October 1.
The order says that all the FBOs having licence for production of blended mustard oil were asked to sell the stocks as unblended oil and they may apply for the modification of their FSSAI licence which will need to be processed and approved by the concerned designated officers expeditiously.
