In what marks a watershed moment for the Indian dairy sector, Mother Dairy has unveiled the country’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, a packaging innovation years in the making that promises to fundamentally reshape how India thinks about single-use plastic in food supply chains.
The landmark announcement was made by Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Mother Dairy, in the gracious presence of Mr. Jayatheertha Chary, Managing Director of Mother Dairy.
Unlike conventional plastic pouches that persist in the environment for centuries, the new pouch is engineered to degrade naturally in soil. The material undergoes a transformation into bioavailable wax, which is then broken down by naturally occurring soil microbes, ultimately converting into basic natural elements, leaving no harmful residue behind.
The innovation will be introduced through Mother Dairy’s trusted Cow Milk variant beginning today, World Environment Day, June 5, 2026 , across the Delhi NCR region, home to millions of daily milk consumers.
Crucially, the company has designed the transition to be entirely seamless for consumers. The new pouch requires no changes in how households store, handle, or dispose of their milk packets, a deliberate choice to ensure mass adoption without any behavioural friction.
Mother Dairy has also confirmed that the innovative packaging will have zero impact on the milk’s quality or taste, with the same trusted freshness and nutritional integrity that consumers across Delhi NCR have relied upon for decades.
The dairy giant, which distributes millions of pouches daily, says the move could divert a substantial quantity of plastic from landfills and open drains across the national capital region annually, with plans to scale the innovation across more product lines pending review.
