Promising Recovery of Dairy Sector after 2018 floods

The Dairy department said that Internal procurement of Milk had become a serious issue after the 2018 floods, but its now there’s a positive recovery happening, a 2.75% increase over the previous number. The department has thus announced development plans worth 300 crore for the years 2019-2020.

Deputy Director Sasikumar said, “The rate of increase in procurement has been almost uniform across the State. Speedy recovery measures which include a 22 crore rehabilitation package and schemes such as ‘Donate a Cow’ helped put the sector back on its feet.”

The numbers were – 11,945 heads of cattle were killed, 18,342 cattle sheds and 3417 hectares of fodder grass cultivation destroyed. About 1598 farms and 214 dairy cooperative reported losses of 107 crore.

The department which marks the World Milk Day today, will have the Governor P. Sathasivam attending, said daily milk procurement went up to 18.64 lakh litres by the end of year 18-19 from 18.14 lakhs in the previous year.
