There are many reasons why the formation of dust is a serious topic. Not only because of the high risk for health but also for industrial safety. It reduces the profit as well because of the high losses and the cleaning effort. The SANACEL® HOC-Type counteracts this negative effects and also contributes some positive properties:

Dust Reduction Trials
To show the effect of the newly developed HOC-types SANACEL® bamboo 40HOC and SANACEL® bamboo 90HOC was tested with the extreme example cinnamon. In food industries ground cinnamon is one of the most difficult ingredients to process. The very small particles markedly complicate the processes. They cover the production facilities if they whirl up and cause an enormous explosion risk. The dust number of cinnamon is higher than of flour or cement. In the first step the particle size was analyzed by the use of a sieve analysis. The results are shown in table 1.
In a special treatment the SANACEL® fibers are enriched with vegetable oil. They are neutral in taste and odorless. Also they have no influence to the coloring of the cinnamon and are invisible in the cinnamon as well. For the analyzation of the dustiness the dust number was determined by an optical scattered light measurement. The standard is 100% cinnamon. The comparative samples are cinnamon-fiber-mixtures with a fiber amount of 1.5 percent, 3 percent resp. 5 percent.
The measurement was performed by a DustView ll measurement device. A 30g sample falls through a porthole with a defined height into the sample chamber. The analyzation starts directly after opening the porthole. Caused by the procedure dust raises in the chamber. The formation of dust is detected by the decrease of a laser beam (absorbance measurement) (figure 1).
During the measurement the decrease is detected as a dust value between 0 and 100, whereas 0 corresponds with no shading of the laser beam and 100 with a total shading. The dust value is a time-dependent parameter therefore the 0-value is determined before each measurement (calibration). The measurement runs for 40 seconds and detects a curve. The dust number is calculated by the maximum dust value plus the dust value after 30 seconds (triple determination).
Figure 2 shows the dust numbers of each trial. The standard with 100% cinnamon has the highest dust number. The dust numbers with fiber amount are markedly lower than these of the standard. The figure distinctly shows the higher the amount of fibers the lower the dust number. SANACEL® bamboo 40 HOC has the smaller dust number by comparison of the different fiber types.
The dust formation of cinnamon is extremely high. The reasons are the many very small particles and the corresponding low weight of them. The smaller and lighter the particles the more particles raise up and the longer they stay in suspense. The dust number of cinnamon is with STZ 85 higher than the one of flour (STZ 12) or cement (STZ 80). An enormous reduction of the dustiness can be achieved by adding a SANACEL® HOC fiber.
The dustiness can be reduced about 50% with a fiber amount of 5%. The oil coated fibers bind the other smaller and lighter particles – this leads to a prevention of the formation of dust. This effect is recognizable because the highest value at the dust measurement is markedly lower. Another outcome is a lower value after 30 seconds with the added fibers. The particles sink faster to the ground because of the higher weight of the bonded particles. The more particles are bonded to each other the better this effect. This is the reason why SANACEL® bamboo 40 HOC is the most effective. The high surface of the short fibers enables to bind more particles.
